So, tea cozies. In our shop, tea cozies are the elephant in the room. Everyone sees them when they come to Queen’s Pantry, but no one is really sure of what they are, what they are used for, or why you would even have one.
No one wants to ask, either.
I have heard them referred to as hats, toaster covers, coffee pot covers, and “that thing my grandma has”. But rarely are they named for what they are – a Tea Cozy.
Do you have one? I do. I actually own two. Why ever do I have two of something that is so… odd, old-fashioned, or out-of-date?
Well, let me tell you, I love my tea cozy. I really, really do. Why you ask? Well, let me tell you why. I can make a full pot of hot, steaming tea and then pour a cup into my favorite mug. I’ll plop my cozy down on top of my tea pot, which is holding another cup or two of liquid goodness. I will inevitably get distracted by something, and in an hour think to myself “hmm, I’d really love a cup of tea, but I don’t really want to make one”.
And this my friends, is the reason why I own a tea cozy.
I have a perfectly steeped, still steaming, delicious cup of my favorite tea done and ready to drink.
There are quite a few styles of tea cozy on the market. You can find them knitted, quilted, felted, double-sided, crocheted, or travel-style. Some are set down on top of the tea pot, some use velcro to secure closed, some are held on the tea pot with elastic.
At Queen’s Pantry, we sell a few styles of cozy – the Pop-Over and the Wrap-Around. Some are Irish-made, U.S.A. hand, and a few are hand-made.
I personally like the Pop-Over style the best, and I have a 4 cup size and a 8 cup size. Because of that, all of my tea pots will be snug and warm no matter what! Like I said though, there are all sorts of options on the market.
Now. Don’t you think you need a tea cozy?
